Cyber Criminals Threaten Champions League Final

May 25, 2018 by

Ahead of the Champions League Final set to be played in Kiev, cyber security experts, as well as Ukrainian officials have warned that the threat of attack from criminal sources might affect the hardware and software in the country during the event.

Ukrainian security services have told reporters, “Security Service experts believe that the infection of hardware on the territory of Ukraine is the preparation for another act of cyber-aggression by the Russian Federation, aimed at destabilising the situation during the Champions League final.”

Cisco Systems has revealed that their cybersecurity unit Talos has found a malware attack that may affect up to half a million routers in the country.

The system of malware being used for the attack is known as “VPNFilter,” which shares code with other, previous forms of malware that wreaked havoc on Ukrainian systems in the past. Talos has stated that the VPNFilter has been, “actively infecting Ukrainian hosts at an alarming rate.” The infections have spiked this month in particular, most likely as a response to the Champions League Final.

While the Talos Unit has not officially pointed its finger at Russia, they did report that the malware was being deployed by, “state-sponsored or state-affiliated” actors. They believe that the attack on Ukrainian systems alongside a globally viewed sporting event could have long-reaching implications.

The Ukraine and Russia have had bad relations in recent years, and experts have said that Russia has been in the forefront of global cyber attacks, and are most likely behind the current assault on the Ukraine.
