Gabriel Jesus scored four out of the nine goals, followed by Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and Riyad Mahrez scoring against Nigel Clough’s League One team. Headers from Jesus and De Bruyne pushed them to 2-0, with the Brazilian adding in a third, and Zinchenko’s curler pushing the team up by another four. Jesus managed to claim another two headers, with Walker, Mahrez, and Walker scoring further goals before the end of the game.
It was the first time in over 21 years that Manchester City scored more than eight goals in total for a single match. They beat Huddersfield Town 10-0 for a second-tier league game in November of 1987. This also means that the team has scored 16 goals over four days after beating Rotherham United 7-0 for the third round of the FA Cup. Their second leg, which is considered a formality, will betaking place at the Pirelli Stadium, while the final is set to take place at Wembley Stadium.
Manchester City, who are the Caraboa Cup holders, will be facing either Chelsea or Tottenham for the finals, with the Spurs currently leading 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Harry Kane that took place at Wembley.
