Russian police officials have reported that their officers have been working long hours, their response times have been affected, and their usually normal patrols aren’t as frequent. This comes due to the country preparing for the FIFA World Cup that will be held later this year, and the police force has been scrambling to bolster the security of the regions that tourists are most likely to visit.
Vladimir Vorontsov, who represents the Russian inter-regional Police Trade Union told reporters that the situation at the moment is very dangerous, and that there could be serious consequences. He went on to add that a situation where there aren’t enough police officers around might become very real, and that criminals may benefit the most.
The Russian government has issued thousands of police officers to the 11 main cities that are set to be hosting cities for the World Cup. There are worries of not just rowdy fans, but terrorist attacks that may target heavily populated stadiums. The country currently employs over 900000 police officers nation-wide, but it is unknown how many of them have been assigned to security duty as the World Cup looms.
FIFA, however, has stated that they are confident that Russia will provide adequate security, telling reporters that they have complete trust in the current security arrangements, and that Russia has already proven itself due to the high standards of security during the FIFA Confederation Cup that was held last year.
