There have been many unforgettable moments in the FIFA World Cup this year, but few stunned the audience more than seeing Spain leaving the event altogether. The team left The World Cup during round 16, and Sergio Ramos has come forward to explain why the team decided to pull out.
Julen Lopetegui, who was part of the Spanish team since their build up from the 2010 campaign, departed from the team after agreeing to become the coach of Real Madrid. Lopetegui was fired from his position just a few days before the Spanish team was set to play against Portugal in an opening game.
Ramos has since released an open letter to those who are in support of Spain, blaming their performance and subsequent departure from this year’s World Cup thanks mostly to the decisions of the federation and their forced changes to the team, that lead to much of the instability they faced.
Ramos explained in the letter that it was a new challenge that the team had to face, but something happened that none of them expected. Despite the changes, Ramos added that they maintained their composure in the games leading up to the World Cup, but ultimately their team was too heavily affected by the decisions of management.
Spain only saw on win at the games in Russia, where they beat Iran with 1-0. Their other two games, against Portugal and Morocco, saw all teams completing the matches in a draw.
