The Best Football Club In The World
The 14th instalment of the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off on December 6th and will see 7 of the best battling it out for the ultimate reward: to be crowned the top football club in the world. This year’s participants are Al Jazira, Auckland City, CF Pachuca, Gremio, Real Madrid, Urawa Red Diamonds and Wydad Athletic Club.
This year’s matches will be played in the United Arab Emirates and will consist of 8 in total: a first round tie, two second round ties, a match to determine 5th place, two semi-final matches, a match to determine third place, and the final.
Playing To Defend The Title
Real Madrid are the defending title holders and they will be giving it their all to become the first club in the 14 year history of the world cup to win the competition two years in a row. In the event that they do reach the ultimate goal of successfully defending the title, they will become the first club since Barcelona to win the competition three times.
Are The Non-Europeans Up To The Task?
Gremio and CF Pachuca no doubt realises the weight of the task that lies before them. The only non-European sides to have won the competition were Corinthians, Sao Paulo and SC Internacional.
If Gremio were to win this year’s competition, it will be a matter of capping off a tremendously successful year with the ultimate finish. It will be the first time that Gremio lifts the FIFA Club World Cup trophy. It will be no easy challenge but if Gremio were to continue to play the kind of football that they have been throughout 2017 then the prize is well within reach.
It will largely be up to players Luan, Kannemann, Bruno and Fernandinho to pull the rabbit from the hat. Luan was named Player of the Tournament for the 2017 Copa Libertadores and is widely considered to be the most effective and talented player currently playing in the country’s national league.
As far as Kannemann, Bruno and Fernandinho are concerned; all three of these know what it’s like to compete at Club World Cup level. This makes for an impenetrable trio of experience to draw on.
Other than this, it must be mentioned that Brazil has highest number of clubs to the world cup tournament over the years: seven. Only Mexico comes close to reaching this tally, at six.
