June 18, 2018 by

The FIFA World Cup of 2018 is underway, and the opening ceremony was one that most won’t be forgetting any time soon. The show at Moscow featured fireworks, a giant soccer ball imprint on the playing field, and costume-donned dancers performing for the audience. Alongside this, every participating country’s flag was on display.

It is estimated that there are over 80000 people that were there to be part of the opening ceremony, with Russian president Vladimir Putin making an appearance, as well. Other performance acts include singers Robbie Williams and Aida Garifullina, who took centre staged with some of their most famous songs.

The first match to take place after the ceremony had been concluded was a game between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

One of the commentators that attended the ceremony told reporters that it was a dream for the people of Russia to host the World Cup, and that they waited 8 years before it finally happened. He added further that there was enourmous pressure for the Russian team, as it’s long been tradition that the host’s team wins the first match of the World Cup.

Over the next five weeks, there will be a total of 64 matches that will include all the participating nations, and although Russia has been under pressure to provide a stable environment for the visitors to Russia. There has been some worry over security, but many, such as FIFA, feel confident in their 2018 World Cup hosts.
