21 through 27 August 2017 will see the Total BWF Badminton World Championships being battled out at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The fastest sport on the planet will be played in knock-out tournament format with the top men’s and women’s singles and doubles players competing for the very prestigious title of Badminton World Champion.
The tournament consists of five events, and players are invited by means of a world-ranking qualification system – ensuring that only the best competition is on show.
The BWF Badminton World Championships is rivalled only by the Olympic Games – and only just. In fact the BWF attracts a stronger over-all entry than does the Olympic Games.
The Badminton World Championships initially only took place once every three years, but came a bi-annual event in 1983 and finally held every year save for Olympic Games years, ever since 2005. In 2017 it is the turn of Glasgow to play host to the prestigious event – with other host cities having included London, Beijing, Paris, Madrid and Copenhagen.
China At The Top Of Its Game
China sports reigning champions in three of the five events – with London 2011 having been the last year that a player from the British home nations secured a medal in any of the events. Scotland’s Imogen Bankier partnered with England’s Chris Adcock to win a silver medal in the mixed doubles event.
The women’s singles championship title is currently being held by Carolina Marin of Spain and the men’s doubles title jointly by Indonesian players Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Satiawan.
These players, as well English contender Gabby Adcock and Scottish athlete Kirsty Gilmour will most certainly pose a strong challenge to the Asian dominance in 2017.
Indonesians Set Sights Firmly On Gold-Medal Target
The Indonesian National Badminton Association has reportedly set its sights firmly on a gold medal at this year’s Badminton World Championships. Susi Susanti, head of sport development at the INBA has confirmed that the gold was expected to come from either the men’s doubles or the mixed doubles event.
A strong spirit and hard work are the keys to success and the mantra subscribed to by the Indonesian team, according to Susanti.
England Strong Contenders In 2017
Seeded fifth in the mixed doubles, Chris and Adcock will be looking to add yet another title to their repertoire – and will be joined by Olympic bronze medallists Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge, who are currently seeded 14th in the men’s doubles division.
2017 may be the year that England gets its own back yet.
