West Coast Vs Adelaide (Round 23) – August 26
August 26 will see Subiaco Oval hosting its last ever AFL match between the West Coast Eagles and Adelaide Crows. Control over the finals is no longer within the grasp of the Eagles – this after a 21 points loss to the GWS Giants.
The defeat is the final blow to any chances of making the big eight, and their only hope of making the finals now lies with rivals Fremantle – providing of course that Fremantle can actually cause an upset big enough in their match against Essendon.
This having been said, the Crows remain the match favourites.
Sydney Vs Carlton (Round 23) – August 26
While it’s true that the Swans will certainly be entering the match as favourites, they will have to face up to a very confident Carlton on August 26 – this after Carlton’s victory over Hawthorne. However, the fact remains that it marked only their 6th victory this year – and causing them to narrowly escape the dreaded Wooden Spoon award. Coming this close bodes well for no team.
Brisbane Vs North Melbourne (Round 23) – August 26
This is the big one – the one determining who will hold the Wooden Spoon for the 2017 season. The match remains the most controversial for the 2017 season, especially when taking into account that both teams have played a number of good matches, each tallying 5 wins overall.
If the Lions are to avoid the dreaded Spoon, which would be their first since 1998, they will have to defeat an equally determined North Melbourne – facing the dire prospect of their first last place finish since 1972.
The Brisbane Lions are expected to dodge the Wooden Spoon by all counts during this one.
Port Adelaide Vs Gold Coast (Round 23) – August 26
Holder of an almost certain place in the finals, a confident Port Adelaide will be hosting Gold Coast Suns at the Adelaide Oval for the first time. Couple this with the fact that Gold Coast have lost all of their last 7 matches and you have a psychological defeat on all counts even before the ball is played.
Collingwood Vs Melbourne (Round 23) – August 26
At 12 wins for the season, Melbourne has finals hopes for the first time since 2006. It would certainly be a worthy reward for fans, who have stuck by their team through tough times for the last 10 years.
However, there is still a chance that Melbourne could miss out on the finals altogether. May the chips fall in their favour.
Hawthorn Vs Western Bulldogs (Round 23) – August 26
Hawthorn’s recent defeat at the hands of the Blues has knocked all hopes for a finals appearance out of the water. They are bound to want to ensure that the Bulldogs at least suffer the same fate as theirs, on August 26. The Bulldogs have been plagued by everything from injuries to personnel issues for most of the second half of the season – but still managed to secure four successive victories.
Geelong Vs GWS Giants (Round 23) – August 26
This match will no doubt shape the preview to September – and is a matter of third vs. second on the ladder. The excitement is further egged on by the fact that the previous clash between the two sides ended in a draw.
Richmond Vs St. Kilda (Round 23) – August 26
Even though St. Kilda thrashed Richmond in an embarrassing 67 points defeat the last time the two sides met, they will most certainly still have their work cut out for them. Richmond recently secured their highest score in over 3 years, and will be bringing heaps of performance confidence to the day.
Essendon Vs Fremantle (Round 23) – August 26
This will be the final match played at Etihad Stadium for 2017 – and also Essendon’s first time playing host to Fremantle since 2010. Still, Essendon hasn’t beaten Fremantle since the start of 2013, and this is bound to be the cause of a couple of mental challenges ahead of the final round before the 2017 finals.
