Rory Mcllroy To Sit Out On Race To Dubai
Rory Mcllroy has made the surprise announcement that the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October would be his last event for 2017. This effectively means that the pro-golfer will not be competing in this year’s Race to Dubai. He cited the purpose for the three month long holiday as being for health reasons.
Speaking to the press, McIlroy said that he did not foresee that an opportunity to take a prolonged break would avail itself in his professional career ever again, and that now seemed like the perfect opportunity to focus on improving his overall performance as well as to re-evaluate a number of things.
He also said that he was excited to play over the next couple of weeks, but that the three-month action plan had already been put into motion by the team and himself. He made mention of numerous medical tests and assessments being in the pipeline for late October, after which technical tweaking and working on his general playing form would be at the order of the day.
McIIroy has been battling with a rib injury for most of 2017 and has not won any of the four major tournaments since 2014.
The Battle For The FedEx Cup
Meanwhile in New York, FedEx Cup points leader Hideki Matsuyama is feeling a bit like a cat on a hot plate heading into the PGA Tour play-offs with major winners Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas for company.
Matsuyama has said that his focus would be on his game instead of his standings, as a failure to perform early on would rid him of the chance to become the FedEx Cup Champion. It will all come together in September, with the top five players ultimately able to claim a bonus with a win in the season finale.
Matsuyama and his two main rivals –Thomas and Spieth – are separated by only 198 points atop the current standings; a marginal difference by any standards. Thomas especially, poses a definite threat to Matsuyama’s success – having recently won his first major title at the PGA Championships. In addition to the major title, Thomas also reigned golfer supreme in the CIMB Classic, the Tournament of Champions and the Sony Open.
Current World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is currently occupying fourth place in the point standings. Johnson is the defending FedEx Cup Champion and will no doubt be looking every which way for an opportunity to finish well.
