Inaugural World Boxing Super Series Starts Saturday
Australia’s online sports betting enthusiasts will be excited by the World Boxing Super Series, which has its premiere in Berlin this Saturday with a cruiserweight bout between Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk and Germany’s Marco Huck.
The new tournament, conceived by Germany’s Sauerland Promotion and the company’s former CEO, Richard Schaefer, is a kind of a World Cup of boxing, except with no tedious rounds-robin stages. It starts with quarter-finals, featuring sixteen boxers in two divisions, and runs strictly on single-elimination system. So one way or another, betting fans can expect a knockout every time.
The inaugural WBSS, set to run until May next year, features only super-middleweight (168lb/76kg) and cruiserweight (200lb/91kg) divisions. According to the promoters, the seven bouts in each weight bracket will take place at selected venues around the USA and Europe, but not all of the fight particulars have been finalised yet.
Juergen Braehmer v Rob Brant Details Unconfirmed
For example, the super-middleweight bout between undefeated American Robert ‘Bravo’ Brant and Germany’s former WBA and WBO title-holder, Juergen Braehmer, has yet to have a date or venue announced. It looks most likely to take place in late October, probably in the USA, considering that the other super-middleweight quarter-finals will all be in Europe.
Braehmer is odds-on in outright futures at online sports betting sites, at around $0.50 and up. The two-time former light-heavyweight world champion is the favourite on experience: he’s had 51 fights, compared to Brant’s 22, and has won 48 of them, 35 by KO.
On the other hand, Bravo, offered at around $1.50, can’t be dismissed offhand. He’s 12 years younger than his opponent, and his 22 fights have all ended in victory, 15 by KO.
The Rest of the WBSS Quarter-Finalists
There are three other bouts in the WBBS super-middleweight QFs, starting on 16 September in Liverpool, with the UK’s Callum Smith vs Swede Erik Skoglund. On 7 October, Turkey’s Avni Yildirim meets Brit Chris Eubank Jr in Stuttgart, and Britons George Groves and Jamie Cox face off in London on 14 October.
The cruiserweight bracket includes Cuban Yunier Dorticos against ‘Russian Hammer’ Dmitry Kudryashov on 23 September in San Antonio, Latvia’s Mairis Briedis fighting Cuba’s Mike Perez in Riga on 30 September, and the 21 October bout between Russian Murat Gassiev and Poland’s Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, at a venue yet TBD in the USA.
