Anthony Crolla and Ricky Burns Fight Update 

If fighting for your career was ever a thing, then the Crolla and Burns fight is definitely it.  The winner will be one step closer to regaining the world lightweight title and the loser may very well have to make peace with the fact that it’s over and probably has been for some time.  And then of course there’s the little matter of national pride, as it’s a stand-off between Scot and Brit.  The plot doesn’t get any thicker than that.

Anthony Crolla will be stepping into the ring after two successive world title defeats at the hands of Jorge Linares, having failed to reclaim the WBA lightweight title back in March of this year after having lost it to Linares in September of 2016.

Ricky Burns hasn’t had a much better time of it either, having lost his WBA super-lightweight title to Julius Indongo in April of this year.

The Battle Of Staying In The Fight

It would probably be an extreme statement to make, but the overall expectation is that the October 7 loser would have nowhere left to go.  The incentive for both fighters is to simply stay in the game.  Whilst most would consider this a losing battle to start with, Crolla disagrees, the good-guy fighter being of the opinion that even the loser would be able to come back from the fight for another go.  He does admit to realising that this particular feat would be a tough trick to perform.

Anthony Crolla has the extra element of fighting in his home city of Manchester to contend with.  Both Crolla as well as Ricky Burns are known to be general good guys all round, with not much trash talk expected in the run-up to the fight.

Hopefully the pair will realise that there’s a lot of truth behind the saying that good guys never win and decide to leave their philanthropic attitudes in the dressing room.

The Story So Far

The October 7 fight stand-off will not be the first time that Anthony Crolla will have had to fight for his career.  Four years ago Manchester saw more of the same when Crolla faced Kieran Farrell in a make-or-break tussle.  The gruelling scrap ended in a trip to the hospital and subsequent retirement from pro-boxing for Farrell and a merciful second chance at a career for Crolla.

For Ricky Burns it hasn’t been a walk in the park either.  After all, what was supposed to be the fight of his career soon turned into a fight for his career when he was defeated by IBF and IBO champion Julius Indongo, this after it had been sold to the press as being a fight that would see Crolla cementing his legacy in pro-boxing.

Perhaps that explains the pre-fight congeniality.
