ICC Clears Ashes Of Match-Fixing Rumours
The ICC confirmed that it has found no evidence to support the rumours of match-fixing in last year’s 3rd Ashes test between Australia and England. The rumours started when the Sun newspaper published a story following the Ashes test match, claiming that one of the newspaper’s journalists had been offered information relating to match-fixing by two rogue bookmakers.
The ICC launched a major investigation into the allegations, but found that there wasn’t any substance or truth behind the claims that were made. The ICC’s general manager of anti-corruption, Alex Marshall, has said that the ICC had carried out a global investigation in collaboration with anti-corruption bodies from member countries and that the outcome had been a very positive one. There existed no evidence whatsoever that any of the players or coaches or match administrators had been in any form of contact with the alleged match fixers.
Dubai Test Match A Dubious Affair
Meanwhile in the UAE, umpires have been dragged into one of the most blatant examples of a rigged game in recent history in Dubai. This after a match in the Ajman All-Stars T20 League was riddled with a string of absurd events.
The match in question was played between the Dubai Star and Sharjah Warriors, with the Dubai Star chasing 136 runs but only managing a measly 46. Batsmen appeared to be mistiming runs on purpose, leaving wickets wide open. What’s more, they would charge at the bowlers after having already missed the ball.
The general consensus is: no one playing league cricket is this bad at it.
The ICC has launched an immediate investigation into the events, fearing that a culture of dishonesty and match-fixing could spread to tests as well as one day internationals. The ICC recently issued a statement regarding the investigation into the integrity of play. The statement confirms that the ICC is of the opinion that strong evidence exists that match was in fact rigged and that this was a dire concern for cricket’s governing body, as it compromised the integrity of the game as a whole.
The ICC also said that it worked hard to uphold levels of integrity in cricket and as such, the organisation was in the process of talking to match officials and players. No further comments were made at the time and no further games have been scheduled at the venue where the match was played.
