November 12, 2018 by

Favourites Australia opened their Women’s World Twenty20 campaign with a 52-run victory over Pakistan in Guyana. The current world number one made 165-5 with three of their players passing 40, and the Pakistan side finishing with 113-8.

India, who have yet to reach a World T20 final, bested New Zealand by 34 runs after claiming 194-5, with Captain Harmanpreety Kaur striking eight sixes for her total of 103. Defending champions and host West Indies beat contenders and Asia Cup winners Bangladesh by 60 runs.

Bangladesh went all out for 46, which is the lowest score in the tournament’s history, and had no players reaching double digits – which came after they restricted the West Indies to 106-8. Seamer Deandra Dottin claimed five wickets for five runs in 3.4 overs, setting another tournament record.

Australia’s side gained early momentum after player of the match and wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy pushed them to 50 without loss with only 34 balls during their game against Pakistan. Healy was caught at long-on for 48 during the eight over, leaving Australia at 72-1.

India was sitting at 40-3 against New Zealand before Kaur stepped in during the sixth over. The 29-year-old rocketed her team to their highest World T20 total, which were just four runs short of their highest score at the tournament ever.

England, who won the inaugural competition in 2009, will be the first in Group A to take on Sri Lanka.
