Joe Root and Jason Roy Hit Centuries For England

February 22, 2019 by

Jason Roy and Joe Root’s centuries assisted England in scoring their highest one day run chase, beating the West Indies by six wickets for their first ODI.

Roy scored a total of 123 off of 85 balls, while Root scored 102 off of 87 balls as the tourists sailed to their 361 run target with eight balls left to spare while playing in Barbados. Eoin Morgan claimed 65 and Jos Buttler sealed the win after Root holed out with the scores even.

Chris Gayle previously made 135 to help West Indies finish with 360 for eight. He struck 12 of his team’s 23 sixes, which is a record for an ODI winnings, as they made their highest total yet against England. Despite this, Roy – who dropped Gayle on nine – didn’t look too troubled throughout the match as the number one ranked one day team played with aggression to surpass the 350-3 they had originally made against New Zealand during their game at Trent Bridge in 2015.

It marks the fourth highest chase by any team in the history of the ODI. And although it was a brilliant wicket for batting, the West Indies were not on form while on the field, with Roy and Root both dropped twice. The next game of the five match series will be taking place at the same venues, where England is hoping to further their current hot streak that they started with their warm-up.
