ICC States No Indication That World Cup Will Stop

February 27, 2019 by

The International Cricket Council has stated that there is “no indication” that the World Cup match set for India and Pakistan in Manchester won’t be going ahead. The match, which is set to take place in the middle of June, was in doubt after a militant group based in Pakistan took responsibility for the suicide attack in Kashmir, a region that is administered by the Indian government. The attack took place in Balakot against a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad group, and shows an escalation of violence in the region. The region separates the two countries, who have fought bitterly for it since the 1970’s, with a pseudo-war still going on to this day.

There have been calls from many Indians for their home team to boycott the game, which is set to be played at Old Trafford. In the statement, the ICC said that they will be continuing to monitor the situation with their members, and that their thoughts are with everyone that has suffered in the incident. They continued that sport has a powerful ability to bring communities together, and they will move forward on this basis.

The attack attracted over half a million ticket requests, despite being only 25000 tickets up for sale. Indian captain Virat Kohli stated that their team would stand by the decision of their government as to whether they would boycott the game. India has won six consecutive matches against Pakistan in the World Cup.
