American Ally McDonald is currently holding on to a one shot lead from a group of golfers that include fellow American Lexi Thompson after the first round of the first women’s major event of 2019: The ANA Inspiration.
McDonald started the event a birdie on all four par fives while playing at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, and reached four under. Thompson birdied 17 and 18 and took second place. Her last appearance at the event saw her left in tears when she lost the title due to a four shot penalty. English Charley Hull is the highest placed Briton, and is tied for 29th on level par.
Compatriot to hull, Jodi Ewart Shadoff, dropped some shots for the opening four holes, but managed to find her stride in a thrilling round to finish at one over when only 28 of the 112 players participating were able to finish under par.
Thompson won the ANA Inspirational in 2014 and was hoping to add a second major title to her name in 2017 before the famous penalty, which she received for marking her ball incorrectly on the green.
In the latest opening round, the world number nine had difficulty off the tee, and was only able to find the fairway seven times from 14 drivers. Talking about her day, Thompson said that there were ups and downs, and that while she did hit some great shots, she also hit some poor ones off the tee.
