Hannah Green Wins Hazeltine National

June 26, 2019 by

Australian Hanna Green claimed her first major title after holding off defending champion Park Sung-hyran during the Women’s PGA Championship. 22 year old Green, who is ranked 114th in the world, had never won a LPGA event before this year’s Hazeltine National.

English Mel Reid had held on to the clubhouse lead on six under as Green faltered around the turn despite being the overnight leader. Park earned a birdie on the last and reached eight under, but Green managed to get away from a bunk r to putt for par and win by a single stroke.

After she rolled the putt from 10 feet on the 18th, she was immediately set upon by her friends and was shown wiping tears from her eyes just a few moments later.

Talking about her win, Green told reporters that she was speechless, and that she was nervous playing the last five holes, adding that she was happy to make the putt on the last. She continued, saying that she always hoped to win in front of an Aussie crowd, and even through she’s not in Australia, it felt like she did anyway.

Green had left the course after 18, 36, and 54 holes, and was holding on to a one shot lead as she entered the final round. Her latest win has secured a third women’s major title of the year following Lee Jeong-eun during the US Open and South Korea’s Ko Jin-Young at the ANA Inspiration.
