Breakdancing has made progress in being included in the 2024 Paris Olympics after the sport’s inclusion was approved by the International Olympic Committee. Along with climbing, skateboarding, and surfing, breaking was first proposed by Paris organisers earlier in the year in February.
The final decision on the inclusion of the sport will be made during the later half of 2020 by the IOC executive board. Games chiefs are aiming at introducing events that provide opportunities for more gender-balanced, urban, and younger sports and audiences.
Talking about the inclusion, Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet told reporters that along with being creative and spectacular, these spots generate engagement among younger people, and they also project values that they hold dear in terms of diversity and openness among the event’s athletes. He continued by saying that he is delighted with the IOC Session’s vote that’s in favour of their proposal to include sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing, and breaking for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games programme.
The president added that their aim from the start has been to highlight the strengths of the games for 32 Olympiads, which includes the excitement of the performance along with the diversity of the sport while also using the opportunity afforded by the Committee to enhance their programme and add new dimensions.
Breakdancing first emerged as a new sport, along with climbing and bouldering, last year during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, but none made it to the main Games.
