Scottish Laura Muir claimed a personal best time after she took third place for the women’s 800m for the Diamond League event in Monaco. 26-year-old Muir, who is the European 1500m champion, finished her event with a time of 58.42 seconds, while fellow compatriot Lynsey Sharp ended in fourth place with 1L58.76, and Ajee Wilson earned 1:57.73.
Justin Gatlin, the world champion, finished at 9.91 seconds to beat Noah Lyles for the 100m, while women’s mile winner Sifan Hassan clocked 4:12.33 seconds and set a new world record. The new record eclipses the one set by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia in 1996, where she finished with a time of 4:12.56.
26 year old Hassan, who was the European 5000m gold medallist, cleared the field with to laps, and stated afterwards that the first 800m were slow and she didn’t think that it would be a world record, and was surprised when she crossed the line and was told of her accomplishment.
British Laura Weightma finished in second place with her own personal best of 4:17.60, while Northern Ireland’s Ciara Mageean claimed eight place with a personal best of 4:19.03, and Welsh Melissa Courtney in 12th place with 4:27.76. The race had been named “Brace like Gabe Mile” in honour of former American distance runner Gabe Grunewald, who recently died from cancer at the age of 32. The runner was given a tribute at the race, after which four national records were broken.
