Australian Female Athletes Stand Out in Sports Awards

Honours for Ashleigh Barty have continued to roll in with the world number one tennis player being named sports woman of the year in Australia. This comes a week after the player was given The Don award at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame awards that took place in Melbourne, with Barty also scooping up the Women In Sport Moment of The Year due to her French Open victory in June. Accepting the top award through video, Barty said that she was fortunate to be nominated among so many other empowering women in Australian sport, and that to walk away with the award was a bonus.

There were a number of other big names I Australian women’s sport, many of which stunned during the awards night, which included Australian netball captain Laura Geitze, rugby sevens gold medallist Charlotte Caslick, and AFLW athlete Tayla Harris. The Australian women’s cricketers took Team of The Year for the second consecutive time, with captain Meg Lanning claiming the leadership award.

Louise Evans, Women Sport Australia communications director, has saluted Barty as a champion who was gracious in both victory and loss, as well as the women’s cricket team for their domination across the world. Evans told reporters that they were celebrating their amazing success and applauding their deserved achievements. Evans made mention of the ICC T20 World Cups in Australia next year, with a prize pool of $A3.6 million for the women’s event compared to $A8.3 million for the men’s.
