Australian all rounder Glenn Maxwell has stated that he will be taking a short break from cricket in order to deal with some mental health problems. 31-year-old Maxwell has played a total of 171 games for Australia across all formats since he made his international debut in 2012. He played his first two matches of the ongoing Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, but has since been replaced by batsman D’Arcy Short. Head of Australia’s national squads, Ben Oliver, has stated that the well being and health of their staff and players is paramount, adding that Glenn had their full support, and that he was an important part of the Australian cricket family.
Cricket Australia has said that Maxwell had raised the issues with support staff and was given support by Cricket Australia along with Victoria in his decision to take an extended break from the game. They added that Maxwell had been experiencing some difficulties with his mental health. Maxwell had scored 62 off of 28 balls in the opening T20 victory against Sri Lanka, but was not required to bat for the second match as Australia had won by nine wickets.
He had played seven Tests for the country, but is more well known as one of the more destructive batsman in the game. In recent years, the player has been left out of Test and one-day teams, decisions that were ultimately met by controversy from both local and international fans.
