Smith Sees Doping Ban Lifted

February 12, 2020 by

Greg Smith has seen his doping ban lifted and may return to coaching Athletics thanks to a legal loophole. Smith, who until recently was in charge of training Bendere Oboya, the Australian World Championships 400-Metre runner and rising star, tested positive for drugs in May last year. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has decided not to appeal the latest decision because of the cost involved and because legal advice has warned them that their chances of success are low.

ASADA confirmed that Smith returned positive A and B samples for LGD-4033 and its metabolite di-hydroxy LGD-4033, both prohibited. Originally developed to treat conditions that cause wasting of the muscles like cancer, muscular dystrophy, and osteoporosis, it has a steroid effect on the body, but produces none of the side effects usually associated with the cardiac glucoside.

As a result, Athletics Australia suspended Smith’s coaching certification, breaking the news the day before the 2019 National Championships in which Oboya was taking part after the Anti-Doping Rule Violation Panels findings were confirmed.

Smith appealed the ADRVP’s decision, taking the matter to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. He argued that he was not an athlete at the time he tested positive. A spokesman for ASADA said that Smith was registered as an athlete with Athletics NSW for the 2017-18 season and took part in a March 2018 event. But the AAT determined that he was not strictly an athlete who competes in sport when he tested positive for the banned substances when he was tested on the 16th of May 2018 and so the ban’s been lifted.
