Australian Winter Sports Suffers Major Setbacks

May 11, 2020 by

Hundreds of local athletes who were set to take part in Olympics have had their hopes dashed, with the Tokyo 2020 event now officially delayed. However, it is the 2022 Beijing Games that are perhaps being impacted the worst.

As it stands, Australia managed to take home 3 gold medals in the 2018 Winter Games, an event which was held in Pyeongchang. But virtually all training regimes for the event set to be held in Beijing 2022 have been put on temporary hold, throwing the prospect of being properly prepared into total chaos. Training camps had been organised in Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. But all of these plans have now been put into question, with the government saying that nothing can be done until the global health situation has been brought under full control.

In regards to the global health crisis, Australia has managed to keep the situation under relative control. At least in comparison to some other regions of the world. Less than 7,000 active cases have been recorded, and 97 deaths announced.

Steps are already being taken to ease social restrictions and return the country to normal. However, many travel and border restrictions remain in place, which are necessary in order to ensure that a second surge of infections does not occur.

Geoff Lipshut, Australia’s Winter Olympics chef de mission, commented on the situation. He explained that athletes normally have a month off around April, but now that that period has passed the athletes should be back in full training. They presently remain idle.
