Prime Minister Scott Morrison has affirmed that crowds of as many as 10 000 people will be permitted to gather in sports stadiums nationwide from July onwards. These updates on the social distancing restrictions put into place to combat COVID-19 come in the wake of the spread of the novel coronavirus being arrested.
Spectators have been barred from attending sporting events all over the country since the middle of March. This was when the industry as a whole ground to a halt as the pandemic took hold and desperate attempts to contain and eradicate it began. But the outbreak is largely under control now and the Australian Football League and National Rugby League have already returned to the field.
These guidelines will only apply to arenas with the capacity of 40 000 or under and visitors will still be ticketed and seated with social distancing rules in place. Attendance will additionally be limited to 25% of the venue’s capacity. So, the Adelaide Oval and Melbourne Cricket Ground are still off-limits because bigger spaces make enforcing social distancing measures more difficult.
Morrison told reporters recently that this move is part of Step Three in states and territories that choose to move to the new level. He added that these new regulations will take some work to implement.
Limited numbers of sports fans will be allowed in to watch AFL games during the next round of fixtures too as certain states begin relaxing their particular social distancing measures as well.
