Jericho Cup to End Spring Carnival

June 22, 2020 by

The Jericho Cup will drop the curtain on the Spring Carnival, says Racing Victoria. The association has confirmed that it will be run on the 29th of June 2020. And the consolation race additionally scored a boost for its prize money, now offering AU$60 000 with a Gold Bonus from the Victorian Thoroughbred Scheme worth AU$20 000. This announcement means that the countdown to the longest flat race in the country, held at Warrnambool, has officially begun.

The race covers a whopping 4 600 metres and is open to horses bred in New Zealand and Australia only. It will once again take place in the iconic jumps course in Warrnambool. The Jericho Cup got reincarnated two years ago after starting life in the Palestinian desert just outside Jericho all the way back in 1918. It commemorates the light horse involvement of Australian and New Zealand in World War I.

Ablaze, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, took the second turf edition last year before going on to complete an important Warrnambool double when the horse emerged victorious in last month’s Grand Annual Steeplechase in May 2020. This year’s race will see 14 runners taking part, under Benchmark 90 handicap conditions, with prize money worth AU$300 000+.

The first horse bred in Australia over the line in eight races across Australia and New Zealand will automatically be entered into the Cup should they nominate and accept. The list includes the Jericho Cup Consolation Race in Warrnambool 1 December 2019, already won by Californiagrandcru, the Wagga Wagga BM74, the New Plymouth BM82, and the Mt Gambier BM75.
