All-time leading England wicket-taker James Anderson says he’s nowhere near his bowling sell-by date.
Recently turned 38, Anderson’s poor performance during England’s recent only-barely victory over Pakistan sparked a new wave of speculation about the leading pace bowler’s future. Anderson is now officially at an age where retirement is beginning to look a lot like the next plausible step, with many of his pace-bowling peers long since out of the pro-game.
Anderson does admit not having bowled his best game during England’s first test against Pakistan at his Old Trafford home pitch but is quick to point out that he doesn’t believe it fair or reasonable that his career should be considered hanging in the balance because of a single below-par show of performance. He wants to play as long as he possibly can, a keen-on-cricket Anderson reportedly said during a post-match conference call with reporters.
The quick-paced cricketer was apparently however quick to add that if he were to “keep bowling” the way he did during the mentioned recent Test match, whether or not to retire will soon become a decision no longer his own to make. Even though hungry to continue playing cricket, the selection process will in such an event have the final say, said Anderson.
A veteran player with 154 Tests in the bag, James Anderson holds the record for the most wickets taken by any paceman in the history of Test cricket. His 590 wickets taken have yet to be beat.
