A reportedly highly emotional Shane Watson has apparently called time on his victory-studded professional cricketing career – and across all formats.
According to a Indian Premier League news report ran by an India newspaper, an emotional Watson could be seen addressing his team-mates and calling time on his career following the final game played by Chennai Super Kings in the 2020 edition of the IPL. Revealing his decision to retire to his teammates, Watson reportedly thanked the rest of the squad for what he described to have been a “great privilege” playing alongside the rest of the franchise.
Watson officially retired from Test cricket back in 2015 but has since then continued playing T20 tournaments. During his time playing in the IPL, Watson scored a total of 3874 runs, took 92 wickets, and caught 40 balls.
The celebrated Aussie played his debut match for Australia in 2002 and would eventually go on to score a stupendous 10,950 international runs playing for the national side. He’s also one of the very first players to have scored a century in all three international cricketing formats.
Other career accolades include being named man of the tournament in 2008 as well as in 2013, scoring 52 runs in the 2008 Indian Premier League final, and scoring 117 runs in the 2018 IPL final.
Though not officially announced as of yet, word of his retirement has led to numerous tributes streaming in across social media platforms. Watson is hailed by many as being one of the biggest game-changers ever in the history of the IPL.
