22-year-old boxer Justis Huni injured his right hand in his victory against Paul Gallen. Further scans and tests have revealed that he may need surgery, forcing him to pull out of the 2021 Olympic Games.
He had previously hurt his hand while sparring with Semisi Kalu just before he was set to take on Gallen but brushed off the injury. The injury was aggravated during the first round against Gallen.
Huni and his team are devastated by the news. In addition to missing the Olympics and the chance of going for the gold, he will also need to endure a lengthy recovery period before he can train and fight again. Additionally, he has an injury to the thumb on his left hand although not as severe.
A strapped right hand and injection to the left thumb was thought to be enough to make it through the fight, however, that was not the case and ended up doing more harm than good. The first round was painful, and the pain only intensified with every passing round. The injury came because of a knuckle to the elbow and has since worsened to the point of needing surgery.
While many have labeled fighting this close to the Olympics as a dumb move, Huni needed fights to prepare and not just sparring. Unfortunately, this is one of the “perks” of the sport.
Funny enough, before the fight that ended his Olympic dream, Gallen had promised to do exactly that. Huni had dreamt of making it to the Olympics since the age of seven, a dream that he had thought came true until recently
