Ted Dexter, former England cricket captain and a man widely regarded as one of the best players of his time, has died. He was 86.
Dexter’s family confirmed his passing in a formal statement on Thursday morning, confirming the cricketing great had passed away peacefully in a hospice in Compton while surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Known by those who adored him as “Lord Ted”, he played for both England and Sussex. Of the 62 Test matches played for his country, Dexter captained 30.
Dexter’s former county also released a tribute in honour of its former captain and club president. He during his career scored a grand total of nine Test hundreds. When he retired, he went on to chair England’s selectors’ panel.
He became famous for his sheer bravery at the pitch, as well as for his fiery sense of adventure in cricket as well as in life. So spirited was he when facing off against some of the world’s fastest bowlers, that he earned a reputation of being a fearless middle-order batsman.
Away from the field, Dexter had several interests and hobbies. He excelled as a golfer and will be remembered as a true horse racing enthusiast. In addition to all of that, he also authored a couple of crime novels in his free post-retirement time.
Following a car accident in 1965, which led to his early retirement, he had managed to postpone the end of his playing career until 1972. He then took to a new career in broadcasting.
