Mick Malthouse, the legendary coach for the Australian Football League, was the first person to take aim at the association regarding how it is approaching a restart in 2020, and now the Chief Health Officer in Victoria, Brett Sutton, is having his say.
Both are advising the AFL to look around Australia as they search for a date to start things up again this year. Things have been relatively quiet in this sector for a while now since they’re waiting until the end of the month to determine when Round Two of the season will begin. They’ve been far less vocal than the National Rugby League regarding what’s going on behind closed doors since they pulled the plug on Round One.
But Gerard Healy has put forth June 21 as an option and Nick Riewoldt has described the situation as hopeful, saying that there could be a finish by the middle of October.
Sutton has suggested that a national conversation needs to take place regarding the next round, because it directly relates to how teams can move throughout Australia. He said that nobody wants a situation where everyone is forced into quarantine for two weeks every time they cross a state border, and the AFL wouldn’t be able to work like this.
But a detailed proposal is required, one that describes how things will be managed, how social distancing rules will be enforced, and what kind of surveillance will be in place to monitor players’ health. He added that everyone is keen to get things moving again, as long as the right assurances are in place.
