AFL Makes A Decision Regarding Grand Final

March 12, 2021 by

The AFL’s decision-making powers have now made a decision on whether to repeat last year’s night-time format for this year’s Grand Final. The decision was made that it will be staged at the MCG in late September, and also that it will revert to its usual afternoon timeslot in 2021.

Last year’s event was full of firsts for the big smash, including being played under lights in a unique night-time slot at Brisbane’s Gabba. Primarily staged this way because of strict health and safety protocols, and for several related reasons not having been in a position to be played as per the event’s long tradition in Victoria, there will hopefully this year be no reason to move the Grand Final around.

Even though last year’s event did manage to attract strong television ratings because of the night-time slot, drones of football traditionalists had expressed their dissatisfaction with the under-the-lights spectacle. They’ll be happy to have heard it revealed that this year’s Grand Final showdown would start in the traditional afternoon timeslot of 2:30pm.

Barring any further hiccups in terms of biosecurity restrictions, the hope is that the MCG will once again be able to accommodate fans at full capacity come September 25.

The idea is to give footy fans all over the country that special feeling of familiarity they’ve become accustomed to, said AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan in a statement earlier this week. He also added that he would like nothing more than to see 100,000 fans back at the MCG supporting the event of the year on the last Saturday of September.
