Maric Announces Retirement on Thursday

An emotional Ivan Maric announced his retirement to his teammates on Thursday, at Punt Road. The ruckman and spiritual leader is stepping away from the AFL.

Punt Road saw Maric announcing the end of his AFL career to his teammates on Thursday morning, revealing that the 2017 season will be the last one for him –but, in a characteristic fashion, there was a twist.

Maric Dons Goggles to Deliver the News

The 31-year old player decided to announce the news whilst wearing goggles, a fact which delighted his teammates, who laughed whilst wiping away their tears. Maric’s address ranged between vulnerability, sadness, and humour, and his teammates’ reception of the news was heartwarming.

Maric is Happy with His Decision

Maric said that he believed that this was the right time, and the correct decision for both himself and the club, and that this made him feel happy and at peace with his imminent departure. He stated that he had resolved to see this year out at his absolute best, and vowed to take every chance to compete at the top of his ability for his team.

Maric Sad Over the End of His Time with the AFL

In an inspiring show of honesty, Maric conceded that his ego had been bruised when it became clear that his career with the AFL was coming to an end, but that he also knew that it was the right decision, for him, his family, and the football club.

Maric went on to say that when the final siren sounded for him he intended to walk out with his chest up, his shoulders out, and holding his head high. He believed that he played the way he should have, and the best that he could have, and that he believed he had made his family and friends proud of him.

Although Maric has been disregarded in favour of Shaun Hampson and Toby Nankervis in terms of the ruck ranks, the beloved ruckman has remained a key figure at Richmond, working in a coaching capacity.

Maric has taken part in 8 matches for Richmond in the VFL over the season, and spent time mentoring some of the club’s ruckmen while doing so. Damien Hardwick, coach for Richmond, had to fight back his tears during the tribute he paid to Maric, who he has accredited with establishing a strong culture for the club.
