Western Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen has been dumped.
The Bulldogs during a “shock” team announcement on Thursday night confirmed the makeup of the team about to take on Collingwood in the upcoming season opener – with Johannisen listed all the way down among the emergency reserves at number four. He’s lost his former spot to replacement halfback-liner Taylor Duryea, who enjoyed but a significantly limited pre-season run.
So limited in fact, that Duryea completely missed the Bulldogs’ single official pre-season game, partaking only in a solitary pre-Round 1 scratch match.
The clearly out-of-favour Johannisen, by contrast, played all of 17 games for the Bulldogs in 2021.
When informed of the decision by the Dogs, AFL great David King seemed unable to verbalise anything more than a surprised “wow”.
Also about to make his big debut for the Dogs is aged recruit Anthony Scott. He’ll be joining the Bulldogs as they take on the Pies in Friday night’s league blockbuster start.
But Collingwood have announced a few surprise inclusions of their own, with top draft pick Ollie Henry about to make his own AFL debut in the upcoming season opener. The Pies announced on Tuesday afternoon that Henry, who is the brother of Geelong’s Jack, will be having a go at impressing the forces that be on the weekend.
The surprise bit, but certainly an inclusion worth celebrating, is the return of Jeremy Howe to the getup for the first time since 2020’s Round 4.
Confirmed as withdrawn from the upcoming season opener is Tigers captain Trent Cotchin.
