Early-exiting Magpies star player Dayne Beams has for the first time spoken out about his severe battle with addiction. Beams is currently involved in talks regarding the possibility of an agreement that will see him walk away from the sport and from Collingwood with 2 more years remaining on his contract with the Pies. He has cited his mental well-being as the reason for his request for an early departure.
Beams this week told a popular podcast how he had following the death of his father suffered a complete breakdown. After a protracted battle with cancer, Beams father passed away about two years ago in 2018.
The 30-year-old, who spoke of his battle with addictions to prescription pain killers and gambling, in 2014 moved to the Lions in order to be closer to his ailing father. His father’s passing left him broken and confused ahead of what was set to be a landmark 150th game against Port Adelaide. His battle with addiction only grew worse from that point onwards, said Beam, along with the general state of his mental health.
Beam remembers having initially considered his addiction a great coping mechanism – and something actually helping him cope. He says he now realises that his addiction had in fact been the worst thing for him and that he could have resorted to approaching his pain in a much more positive way than what he ended up doing back then.
Now, on the eve of his departure, Beams says he’s finally ready to face his mental health demons. He says he’ll forever remain a fan of the Magpies.
