Richmond compatriots Nick Vlastuin and Dylan Grimes have been cleared of the respective charges of staging levied against them by the AFL. This after written appeals laid before the AFL tribunal resulted in the imposed fines being reversed, as well as their names effectively cleared of wrongdoing.
Had the charges remained, Grimes would have looked at a $1,250 fine, and Vlastuin would have had to part with $750. Accused for the second the second time of staging, Grimes came under scrutiny for having bunked out as a result of a push from Jake Stringer during the Tiger’s Saturday-night victory over Essendon. Vlastuin’s maiden staging allegation followed his having supposedly overreacted to a touch from Tom Bellchambers – also during the weekend’s game against Essendon.
Physical distancing policies have now made it so that players are no longer required to verbally challenge fines before a sitting jury. Instead, a mere written submission is now regarded as being sufficient. The outcome is then decided by a single representative of the jury.
Staging is according to AFL guidelines any action inclusive of an over-exaggeration as a result of physical contact. Even though not clear who it was to have written the pair’s submissions on their behalves, said penman must have done a really good job at explaining their behaviour. The general consensus is that judging from the available video footage of the mentioned incidents, the duo pulled quite the rabbit from the hat in their appeals to the tribunal.
