FIBA Eurobasket 2017 Ready And Set To Go

The FIBA Eurobasket is happening from August 31st up until September 17th – with 24 teams fighting it out on the Basketball court, hoping to reign European Basketball supreme by the close of the competition.  Countries include those as far to the West as Iceland, the UK and Ireland – with Israel and Turkey also in on the action.

Eurobasket is part of a set of four FIBA tournaments played.  The other three are the FIBA AmeriCup (America), the FIBA Asia Cup and the AfroBasket, exclusively open to teams from the African continent.

The Upcoming 2019 World Cup

During previous years the winners of the FIBA Eurobasket – as well as a number of other top-ranked teams – were assured a spot in the World Cup and Olympics.  This is no longer the case as the rules and processes have been changed.

The process is now very much like that followed in the qualification process for soccer’s FIFA World Cup.  A series of qualifiers will be played in order to determine which teams qualify for a FIBA World Cup berth.  This having been said, all 24 teams playing in this year’s FIBA Eurobasket have already qualified for the first round of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.  There are a total of 32 spots available to teams from Europe.

The teams finishing in the top three positions in a total of eight groups will qualify to advance from Round 1 to Round 2 of the qualifiers.  Those who go on to earn World Cup berths are the teams finishing in the top three positions of Round 2 of the qualifiers.

Key Predictions for FIBA Eurobasket 2017

France is expected to win this year’s Group A division, with Greece short on its heels.  Despite the retirement of Tony Parker from the French National team, players like Evan Fournier and Nando De Colo are expected to be more than up to holding the fort.

Greece is expected to advance all the way to the quarterfinals.

Poland and Slovenia are strong contenders for finishing among the top 4.  Poland has a number of younger players as well as veteran player A.J. Slaughter in their star-studded camp.  Youth meets experience should pay off for the Polish.

Goran Dragic will be heading up the Slovenians in what is expected to be his very last international tournament.  Real Madrid’s Anthony Randolph will also be in the Slovenian ranks.
