Usyk Executes Third Title Defence In Berlin
This weekend saw Oleksandr Usyk successfully executing his third title defence, stopping Marco Huck short during the 10th round of the World Boxing Super Series, in Berlin. The official outcome: Round 10 – 2:16. Usyk – former Olympic gold medallist – beat Krzysztof Glowacki for the title a year ago – and now looks forward to successfully overcoming the next hurdle, fighting the winner of the September 30th fight scheduled between WBC titleholder Mairis Briedis and Mike Perez.
Whilst Marco Huck was obviously not the most difficult feat that Usyk has had to master yet, the fight was no walk in the park either. The loss has put Marco Huck in a tricky position – having lost his last two fights and sitting on a three out of five total. This effectively places him at a notch below his current contemporaries.
The September 9 fight marked the kick-off to the 2017 World Boxing Super Series.
Recap Of The Action
Round 1 saw Usyk retaliating with mostly body shots to Huck’s fierce succession of glove poundings. Huck is well-known for playing dirty when the situation calls for it and Usyk was obviously aware of the fact – every ready and able to recalculate when necessary. Round 2 saw Usyk gunning for the advantage for the first time, with the Ukrainian making use of this signature southpaw jab in order to keep the German in the submissive. Round 2 soon led to a Round 3 peppering of jabs – and signalled the beginning of the end for Huck. The German ended up against the ropes by the end of Round 3, probably considering himself lucky not to have gone down like a heavy sack at that point in the match already.
Round 4 saw a new resolve from Marco Huck, sadly without too much of a pay-off, and by the commencement of Round 5 the chips were already starting to fall along with Usyk’s damaging punches.
The 6th Round saw a battered Marco Huck struggling to stay on his feet – let alone land any meaningful punches. Usyk landed a strong left-hander towards the end of Round 6, but slipped and stumbled before he had the chance to finish the German off for good. Huck seized the opportunity – hitting the Ukrainian who was already on the ground. The referee soon put a stop to the dirty trick, the sly stint costing Huck a valuable point.
The next few rounds saw even fewer punches landed successfully by the German – with his failure to achieve or even recover finally culminating in Huck stumbling around in pain inside the ring for all of two minutes before being saved by a merciful wave-off by the referee during the 10th and final round of the fight.
Usyk not only successfully defended his current title, but also ensured his spot at the top of the 200lb division. Get your bets in online at Luxbet and see if you can back the hardest hitter.
