Campbell Not Owning Up To Underdog Status
Luke Campbell has said that he isn’t at all phased by the persistent underdog status that seems to follow him wherever he goes, irrespective of who he ends up fighting. Campbell will be challenging WBA Champion Jorge Linares next – in the early hours of Sunday the 24th of September. Campbell will be travelling to Los Angeles to The Forum in order to take on Linares. Is Campbell aware of the magnitude of the task at hand, and to top it all off, on foreign soil?
Anthony Joshua says yes. Joshua has lent his undivided support to Campbell ahead of taking on Linares, describing Campbell as a dark horse. Speaking to the press, Joshua was quoted as saying that Linares may have pedigree as a professional, but that Campbell was the dark horse in the equation, and definitely more than capable of beating Jorge Linares.
Campbell will be the third Brit to try and beat Linares, after failures to do so on the parts of Mitchell and Crolla. Crolla went as far as trying twice, with the second time yielding even less of a measure of success that the first attempt.
No small wonder when considering that Linares is thought of as one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters.
About A Beating
Jorge Linares has lost only 3 times from a total of 42 fights – this after having turned professional back in 2002.
Crolla seemed as good a man as any to be asking for his opinion ahead of the September 24 fight. According to the Brit, Linares is exceptional at judging distance. If Campbell were to have any chance of rocking the boat, he would have to try and do so right from the start. Apart from that, Linares is fast – it’s one thing to watch in awe as he performs on the pads during practice, but quite another to be at the receiving end of the brute force and speed of the man, Crolla has said.
Apart from impeccable judgement and lightning fast speed – there is also the matter of the body-jabbing punches that tend to come in quick succession. Punches that don’t seem to take anything from Linares as far as the expenditure of energy goes.
According to Crolla, it all comes down to the timing of Linares’ shots. It’s the sheer speed and brute force behind the shots that really make your suffer.
Campbell will really have to pull the cat from the bag on Sunday so as not to suffer more than just a couple of punches.
