Chris Eubank Jr Vs George Groves
It was a victory awarded on a unanimous points decision: between George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr, Groves is the better, and more technical, fighter by far. And really, those of us who believed that Chris Eubank Jr would walk all over George Groves, may have been a little too caught up in the pre-match propaganda.
As it stands now, George Groves has shown himself to be a true champion of the super-middleweight division. Something that not everyone saw coming.
The Value Of Teachability
Groves is a long way off from the unhappy chap that sat dolefully on a Vegas floor after having been flummoxed in the opening round of this standoff with Badou Jack. After that, Groves considered retirement for a while. Had it not been for trainer and mentor Shane McGuigan, skilled in the art of restoring identities and rehabilitating personalities, retirement may very well have become a reality for Groves.
Groves received a second chance under the tutelage and strong hand of mentorship of McGuigan and this certainly showed in the fight with Eubank. The 29 year old had a comeback for every move made by Eubank and was able to stave off every attempted onslaught because, after all, he had learnt too many lessons in the past and these were now serving him well.
When Pride Comes To A Fall
As for Eubank Jr, his future is most likely at middleweight, where more experienced fighters like Groves will not be around to snuff out the flame of talent in the raw. And talent in the raw certainly describes Eubank Jr well. Eubank Jr is fit and shows durability, two traits that often work towards the make or break of a fighter.
Eubank Jr will however have to let go of the notion that he is above receiving proper training. Last week, Eubank told the media that he knew what he was doing and did not need any instruction. The fact of the matter is that his father’s influence is no longer enough and how Eubank plans to make a return will be very telling of the kind of fighter that he is likely to eventually become.
The harsh reality is that Chris Eubank Jr is only 18 months younger than George Groves and yet, as far as holding his own in a fight is concerned, he is miles behind. Chris Eubank Jr needs to keep in mind that time is a friend to no fighter.
