Carl Frampton Returns Home To Take On Andres Gutierrez

Irishman Carl Frampton will be fighting at home for the first time in two years this coming weekend, when he takes on Andres Gutierrez in Belfast’s SSE Arena on Saturday.

Frampton turned professional in 2009.  He had a fan in mentor and manager Barry McGuigan, who firmly believed that Frampton had it in him to go against the big boys.  The world did not see in Frampton the same potential that McGuigan did and as such McGuigan’s prediction that Frampton would become a world champion was met with ridicule and mockery.

Carl Frampton stuck it to the world by becoming the first Northern Irishman to win world titles in not one, but two, divisions: bantamweight and featherweight.

The three-time world champion seemed confident that the weekend’s fight belonged to him – saying that it wouldn’t hurt to turn the three into four.  Speaking to the press, the Irishman said that he had achieved much more than he had ever thought he would when he first turned professional, and that it would be a personal disappointment if a fourth world champion title eluded him.

Andres Gutierrez An “Interesting” Choice

More than 2 million viewers are expected to tune in for Saturday’s fight – this comes as no surprise when taking into account that Frampton claimed more than 75% of the audience share the last time he fought in Ireland back in 2015.

Manager Mcguigan seemed positive that a show of support from Frampton’s fans would go a long way in egging the world champion on to win another title on Saturday, saying that Frampton had been looking forward to fighting at home for quite some time, and that support from his fans was what truly drove him.

Many have wondered about the choice to fight Gutierrez, of all people.  The 23 year old has yet to compete at world level – although it must be said that he has lost only 1 of his 37 fights.

Frampton responded to the questions by saying that Saturday’s fight was going to be a difficult one, and that Gutierrez was grossly underestimated – and a fighter notorious for always entering the ring fully prepared.  Frampton went on to say that he would be focused on one man and one man only on Saturday – Andrez Gutierrez from Mexico.

Rumour has it that Leo Santa Cruz, Frampton’s rival from a previous fight, wants nothing to do with Gutierrez – something Frampton believes to be quite telling about the man Gutierrez.
