Ireland and Afghanistan are currently fighting it out in the two countries’ second ever Test, which begins in Dehradun in India. The Irish side’s home Test gave way to Pakistan during last season, and saw them finishing with a display of a five wicket loss. Afghanistan didn’t prove as competitive a month later after losing within two days to India at Bengaluru.
The sides will be going into the match after a T20 series victory of 3-0 for the Afghan team, which was then followed by a one day series draw. At this point, the two teams know each other well after meeting in 15 limited over contests since the beginning of 2016. The Afghan team have won 10 of their previous matches, which includes a Super Sixes game during last year’s World Cup qualifier, which was a winner-takes-all to secure a place in the event for the English side.
With their last two games called off due to rain, Ireland have one won n three of their 15 contests, with a few of their wins coming in the last 10 days thanks to Andrew Balbirnie’s batting, helping Graham Ford’s team draw for the one day series.
Balbirnie hit a yet unbeaten 145 for Ireland as they recovered from 73-4 to claim a four wicket win in the third day one international. After having to notch a pain in Malahide last year, Balbirnie has said that their second chance in Test cricket is very special.
