Playing Ball With Kaur
The hell that is Harmanpreet Kaur has been unleashed on the Australian women’s Cricket team, and the Aussies are still reeling as a result of the impact. Harmanpreet has almost singlehandedly removed Australia from the Women’s World Cup in Derby on Thursday, smashing a staggering 20 fours and seven sixes from just 115 deliveries.
The Aussies fought back valiantly, but try as they might, could not beat India to the post. The Aussies tallied up 245 all out, with Alex Blackwell accounting for 90 of the 245 points. Captain Meg Lanning wasn’t able to do much in the way of levelling the already sinking ship, having fallen for an eight-ball duck herself.
With the exception of Blackwell, Villani and Perry, no other player in camp Aussie managed to score more than 14 points.
Lanning seemed at a loss for words and a loss for action, saying that they had simply given Kaur too much leeway – and that it proved near impossible to gain again on lost ground.
Many are saying that Australia has been the author of its own downfall this time round – with Kaur being a girl from the ranks of Team Sydney Thunder, under the leadership of none other than Alex Blackwell.
Blackwell has expressed high hopes of signing Kaur for another season with Sydney Thunder.
An Uncertain Future
As if losing wasn’t painful enough, the team will be returning home on the official unemployment list, as the dispute between Cricket Australia and the Australia Cricketers’ Association rages on. Lanning seemed confident that the CA and ACA have been working behind the scenes throughout the World Cup in order to try and reach an agreement, saying that she believed that it would all play out well in the end. This may merely be as a result of having been lulled into a false state of rest. The CA and ACA were in agreement that it would be in everyone’s best interest to leave the players at peace during the Women’s World Cup.
Many of the squad will now move on to the T20 in England, but will effectively no longer be employed by Cricket Australia.
Former cricketer Mitchell Johnson does not share Lanning’s positive sentiments, saying that he believed that the long-term damage caused by the prolonged pay dispute has already been done, despite reports that the negotiating parties are ploughing feverishly through the controversial MOU in an attempt to reach a new agreement soon.
The race is on to reach an understanding before the Australian Test squad’s upcoming tour to Bangladesh late in August.
