Australia has beaten India by 146 runs in Perth, levelling the series with their first Test win since their ‘sandpapergate’ that rocked international cricket.
Set at 287 to win, India had resumed at 115 for five during the final day, and never once threatened to take the lead, eventually losing their last five wickets for just 21 runs. They were dismissed for a total of 140, with spinner Nathan Lyon earning 3-339 and finishing with eight wickets for the game, the first of which to break through the team’s recent string of losses, and their first in seven Tests over the last 10 months.
Captain Tim Paine played his first Test in in five matches since he took over from former captain Steve Smith in South Africa. It was also the first victory for newest coach Justin Langer. Australia previous Test saw them face South Africa in Kingsmead.
It was during a later Test that was played at Newlands that Cameron Bancroft was caught making use of sandpaper in order to alter the ball, and Australian cricket came to a grinding help. The scandal led to a series of investigations from Cricket Australia against Bancroft, Smith, and David Warner, and saw Paine take his new position just a few months after being recalled to the squad.
In their four previous Tests since the scandal took place, Australia’s best result came from a draw against Pakistan in a game played in Dubai. They had also only won six of 22 one-day matches since.
