Bayliss: Make Way For Ben Stokes

Stokes To Return In Time For February 7th

Looking forward towards the upcoming T20I Tri Series, and especially the second instalment scheduled to be played on February 7th, England’s Trevor Bayliss has started issuing serious warnings to the squad regarding the return of Ben Stokes. Stokes is expected to join the squad in time February 7th after having been away from the field following the Bristol nightclub incident in September.

Bayliss has warned that upon Stokes’ return, someone else would be making way. There simply is no question about it: Stokes’ presence greatly improves the team. Stokes demands selection when available to play. The 26 year old constantly holds his own in the top 6 and provides an extra seam option, which makes him a considerable asset to the English side.

Stepping It Up A Notch

Bayliss has said that it would not be prudent to be complaining about a problem, which was actually a good problem to have, but that the rest of the squad would do well to keep in mind that Stokes was coming back at some stage as well as the fact that there would be ramifications.

Bayliss added that in many ways it was a very good thing, as players were now on their toes trying to outperform one another so as to ensure that they were not the ones getting axed upon Stokes’s re-integration into the team.

The threesome most likely to feel the brunt of the heat are Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales. Roy may very well be safe, despite having been left out of last year’s Champion’s Trophy semi-final. In the meantime, Roy has managed to score a record-breaking 180 in Melbourne, which should buy him some good grace and time to boot.

Which leaves either Bairstow or Hales in the lurch. Neither of the two players did what was expected of them in the Australia Series, but Hales seems to be the one closer to the swing of the chopping action. He has not been in top form and has very much attracted the attention of those wondering how to make space for Stokes.

The One Day side is currently riding the wave of glory after their recent series victory over Australia. This makes the return of Stokes a bittersweet affair.

However, there’s no doubt about it, England needs Ben Stokes and someone will have to make way upon his return.
