British all rounder Ben Stokes has been awarded the Professional Cricketers’ Association player of the year. The 28 year old helped his team win the World Cup for the first time, and made an unbeaten 135 to win the third Ashes Test against Australia, where they played at Headingley. Talking about the award. Stones said that it comes with a lot of personal pride to receive their award because it was voted in by peers.
Stokes, who is from Durham, won the award ahead of nominees Simon Harmer of Essex, Ryan Higgins of Gloucester, and Dom Sibley of Warwickshire. Stokes claimed 84 not out for the World Cup final, giving his team a hope against New Zealand, and was then chosen to bat for the tie-breaker super over. When that was tied also, England was given the trophy due to them hitting more boundaries throughout the match.
Six weeks later in a third Test, England needed a total of 73 runs when Stokes was joined by Jack Leach. His assault on the Australian bowling side gave England another victory that has keep the series alive for the team. Holders Australia went on to hold on to the Ashes trophy as the series was drawn 2-2. Somerset batsman Tom Banton was voted young player of the year after scoring 549 runs for the T20 Blast, and was called up for the England squad for their upcoming five Twenty20 internationals set to take place in New Zealand.
