Glenn Maxwell, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja are three of the seven members of the World Cup team that have not been named for the 14-man One Day International squad set to tour India next month.
Allan Border has commented that the decision to omit Khawaja and Maxwell didn’t surprise him particularly. He said that it’s likely that these players have been put on notice, and this move should be seen as a warning rather than a termination. Border feels that the selectors are letting these athletes know that they are prepared to move on if necessary and that if players’ performances don’t improve that’s what will happen.
The three upcoming matches in India will be Australia’s first in the ODI arena since they were roughly booted out of the World Cup Semi-Finals by the English team. The tour will kick-start their road to the next 50-Over World Cup set to take place in India in 2024, and it looks like selectors are also experimenting with the line-up before the T20 World Cup next year.
Border believes that, as such, it’s a good time for them to cast the net wide and give different players the chance to showcase what they’ve got to offer. He stated that they are giving a new generation an opportunity now since what the other athletes bring to the field has already been established. He went on to say that this is a good time to jockey the side around a little.
