Eyes on England at Ashes for Wrong Reasons
England is high on the news agenda again ahead of the Third Ashes Test, and for all the wrong reasons. Friday saw yet another scandal unfold as a third alcohol-related incident rocked the English Cricket boat in three months.
Lions batsman Ben Duckett was suspended from the Third Ashes Test after he saw it fit and amusing to tip a drink out onto the head of English veteran player James Anderson. The booze-tipping incident follows the drama caused by Ben Stokes outside of a Bristol nightclub in September and Jonny Bairstow’s head-butting antiques with Cameron Bancroft in October.
England’s coach Trevor Bayliss has said that the Duckett incident is in his opinion not a serious one, but is not quite acceptable either. He also mentioned that in his opinion the incident wasn’t quite in the league of the Stokes and Bairstow affairs.
No Laughing Business According To Lehmann
Australian coach Darren Lehmann, when asked by the press as to whether he found the incidents in the English cricket camp amusing, said that he himself had been through similar incidents in his own coaching career and that they were by no means the stuff that laughing matters were made of.
He said that as a coach you had incidents like those facing England’s coach at various stages of your coaching career and that they were always very challenging. He also went on to say that in the scope of trying to ready your side to play good cricket, it wasn’t amusing at all.
The Focus Is On Australia
Lehmann said that he had complete faith in the capabilities and characters of his own players and that he trusted them to play the best cricket that they can possibly play in the upcoming Third Ashes Test. He said that he trusted his men, that they had had a couple of days off to rest and that he believed that they would all be making their return in one piece and ready to resume playing.
When asked about how the drinking scandals in the English team affected Australia, Lehmann said that he and his team could not afford to worry or be concerned with what was going on with the other side and that England was still a strong team, despite the suspension of Duckett.
He said that Australia’s hope was on a big crowd and a lot of support for 5 days of cricket.
