Thursday saw the cricketing world stunned by the sudden death of former Australian batsman Dean Jones.
Jones (59) died of a suspected heart attack in a hotel while bio-bubbled in Mumbai. He was at the time working as part of India’s Star Network’s Indian Premier League broadcasting and commentary team.
Jones was discovered in his hotel room by friend and former Aussie fast bowler Bret Lee, who after attempting without success to perform CPR and revive his friend, valiantly returned to his role as commentator Thursday’s match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE.
Lee said following his fellow commentator and friend’s death that what Jones probably would have wanted most of all was for the commentating team to carry on doing what they loved best to do, which was to have fun and “get it done” for the game they all loved so much.
And Lee’s is a sentiment shared by Jones’ close friend and former Black Cap Scott Styris, who described his departed friend has having been an absolute cricketing legend. Jones’ passing is a tough day not only for his close makes, said Styris, but also for the larger cricketing world.
Styris also expressed his shock at having only that very morning had breakfast alongside Jones, as well as watched him try to keep fit by jogging up and down the hotel’s passage. He described his friend and fellow cricketing great’s passing as “incredibly sad”.
