India And Australia To Meet In Final
The Australian U19 Cricket World Cup team are ready to take on India in the final. India spun their way into the final on Tuesday when they stormed their way towards a 203-run flogging of arch-rival Pakistan. Hopefully Australia will be able to turn the tables in the tournament decider, after having lost to India in the tournament opener earlier this month.
Jack Edwards, 17-year old Australian opener, is convinced that experience will be what clinches the match for Australia when they meet India in the final in Mount Maunganui. Edwards said that he thought that the best strategy would be to consider what had not worked during the first stand-off and try to avoid the same mistakes in the final. This was, after all, what had worked a charm in the match against Afghanistan. Australia had applied what they had learnt from the spinning and subsequent match strategy in the India game.
When Arch-Rivals Meet
Australia and India are both record three-times winners of the U19 Cricket World Cup and went head to head in a final in 2012, when India reigned victorious by 6 wickets.
For Australia, it won’t merely be a case of having to off-set India’s spinners, but they will also have to deal with India batsman Shubman Gill. Gill currently holds a tall of 341 for the tournament, having been dismissed twice only.
Make no mistake, Australia has a superpower to match that of Gill, in the form of Jack Edwards. The youngster, who is the brother of Sixers’ quick Mickey, is sitting pretty at 188 runs at 47. Edwards’ half-century was after all what had helped Australia towards making light work of sticking it to Afghanistan.
Edwards showed no fear whatsoever as he off-set the spinning variations of India’s Mujeeb Zadran and transformed them into a pair of sixes for Australia.
Seven Years A Charm?
Australia last won the tournament title in 2010, before finishing up as runners-up to India in 2012. In 2014, they finished in fourth place. 2016 was a non-event as they had elected to skip the tournament due to security concerns.
In 2012 television audiences peaked at close to 100 million. The tournament was any promoter’s dream, with two nations in love with the game going head to head. Saturday’s final will be no different. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
