Captain of the Indian team Virat Kohli hit 104 off 112 balls to push his side to a level playing field with Australia during their three-match day one series in Sydney, with the scores not sitting at an even 1-1.
The host had set the visitors 299 to win the match, with Shaun Marsh earning 131 off 123 balls. Kohli was the base of India’s retaliation to the host team, but holed out to Glenn Maxwell off Jhye Richardson, and left his side requiring 77 runs off of the last 28 balls. MS Dhoni, along with Dinesh Karthik, who both remained unbeaten, saw the game to end.
Australian March hit 11 fours and three sixes as the made his way to his seventh ODI century. But the Australian team were unfortunate not to set a higher total to beat after Indian bowlers Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed a combined 4-17 with the last 18 balls. Despite Kohli’s dismissal, Dhoni stepped up to the plate and took the team to the win.
Playing in his 334th ODI of his career, Dhoni initially had struggled in the Adelaide heat toward the later stages of the match, but still managed to score an unbeaten 55 from 54 balls, including two sixes as his boundaries.
After the match, Kohli told reporters that their game was an MS classic, and that he takes the game until the end, when he supports himself to hit the bigger shots.
